Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State says the security challenges faced under the former security chiefs came as a result of their delving into politics.
According to Governor Wike, “instead of concentrating on the security of the nation, the service chiefs were very much involved in politics.”
“This was the problem we had with the previous chiefs, they were involved in politics rather than face the security of the nation.
“Nobody can deny that fact; the moment you politicize security, then you are bound to have problems,” Wike stated via a zoom call.
The governor warned that if the new service chiefs are to toe the path of those before them, then the nation will not experience any turnaround in security issues.
The PDP chieftain said the nation appreciates the change of service chiefs, but warned that the issues do not end at the exchange of baton.
“The new people that are appointed must ask themselves, what is our agenda? Is our agenda to continue with where the last service chiefs stopped, or to make sure we improve?”
The governor’s statement comes few hours after New Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Lucky Irabor led other service chiefs on an operational visit to the Headquarters, Command and Control Centre of Operation Lafiya Dole in Maiduguri, the Borno State Capital.
This trip by the new service chiefs serves as the first operational visit aimed at better prosecuting the war against the insurgents and other miscreants across the country, a task which Governor Wike says is too enormous to be mixed with politics.
‘I Have No Interest In Tinubu’s Presidential Ambition’- Ayodele Fayose
Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, on Wednesday, said he has no interest in the rumoured presidential ambition of All Progressives Congress chieftain, Bola Tinubu, in 2023.
Fayose, who stated this on a PUNCH Live interview, expressed confidence that his party, the Peoples Democratic Party, would produce Nigeria’s president in the 2023 general elections.
He said “Bola Tinubu is a leader in the West. It is a statement of fact” but noted that he has not met or spoken with the former Lagos State governor in years.
Fayose said, “I have never met former governor Ahmed Bola Tinubu in the last three years and I have never spoken with him on the phone once. So, I don’t how they are tying the relationship politically.
“To the best of my knowledge, I am not a member of APC. I have no influence on how he will become if he wants to become. I have no interest; the only interest I have is that a PDP president must be put in place.”
“If this country exists for the peace and enjoyment of all us, we will not be talking about it is APC, it is PDP…A PDP man cannot attend a function with an APC man. An APC man cannot greet a PDP man, we can’t continue like that, it shows level of hypocrisy,” he added.
The ex-governor of Ekiti also said he has not abandoned his ambition to be Nigeria’s president. “The office of the president is a noble one and I will love to be the president of Nigeria if the opportunity permits,” Fayose stated.
‘Stop Disrespecting Me Or I Will Work Against You’- Fayose Warns Makinde
The former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, on Wednesday gave a stern warning to the governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, to stop disrespecting him or he will start working against him.
Fayose gave the warning while speaking to The Punch on Wednesday.
He claimed that he was amongst party chieftains who worked in 2019 to ensure Makinde emerged the winner of the governorship election in Oyo.
Makinde is constitutionally permitted to run for second term in 2023 but Fayose warned him to retrace his step of he will work against his re-election.
The ex-governor of Ekiti, therefore, urged Makinde to speak out if he has anything against him.
When asked what the bone of contention between himself and the Oyo State governor was, Fayose said, “He (Makinde) is the one to tell you if there is any bone of contention. In this West, I am his brother, I am his father.”
Fayose stated, “When Makinde was to contest, I was the one that presented the flag to him and a red pen. It is a higher authority that hangs your rank, a senior officer hangs the rank of a junior officer, that means he saw me as a leader at the time I was giving him the flag at Ogbomosho.
“It was Governor (Rasheed) Ladoja that was holding the structure that we gave to him (Makinde), I was the only sitting governor at the time. I had powers to influence it negatively. Are you telling me the man that gave you red pen has suddenly become your enemy? If he has anything against me, let him say it. Governor Makinde should take it easy.
“When they were contesting election in Oyo State, I was the one giving him information about the senatorial election. I never slept all night. In his own election, I was with him in Ibadan. If he disrespects us, we will tell him that we have capacity to… I am not his mate.
“If he wants peace, he should stop that nonsense, I say it again nonsense. I mean every word I am saying. I’m a responsible Nigerian. If we were born in the same family, I will be older than Governor Makinde by 10 years even if I was not governor. I should be respected. I am a respectable figure in this country, forget any other story any other politician may say.”
Fayose also said he has no plan to join the APC or any other political party. “We need certain level of honour, we need certain level of principles to be able to lead in this country,” he noted.
“Even when I was supporting Governor (Kayode) Fayemi in Ekiti, I told them I can never join APC in my life. It was Governor (Segun) Oni that disrespected me and I worked for Governor Fayemi. If Governor Makinde continues to disrespect me like this, I will work against him. I don’t operate underneath; you know where you are with me. If Governor Makinde wants to hear the story of how he became governor, I will tell him,” the ex-governor added.
Nigerians To Go Back To Normal Lives In Two Months, Says Senate President, Ahmad Lawan After Meeting With Buhari
The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has expressed his optimism in Nigerians getting back to their normal lives in two months.
He gave his expression while addressing State House Correspondents after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari in his office at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Monday February 22, Lawan said the National Assembly would complement efforts to upgrade the Armed Forces by helping with the appropriation for the required equipment.
“I’ve come to meet with Mr. President, to discuss the issue of security of our nation, and in fact, there is nothing more important today or more topical, than the security of Nigeria.
“We had a very extensive discussion on the security of all parts of Nigeria and how we should go about improving the situation, we all have roles to play. Nobody would like to see the kind of things that we experience in various parts of the country in the form of insecurity.
“As political leaders, we have responsibilities to our people and we cannot shy away from that, we have to get our people secured, we have to secure the environment for them to earn their means of livelihood, we’ll like to see our farmers go back to farms before the rainy season starts.
“This means we have to secure the rural parts of Nigeria as well as the urban centres because we need businesses to flourish.
“So I believe that between now and probably the next two months, there will be a lot of activities to ensure that we recover and secure the environments for our people to lead a very normal life.
“We also believe that the government is headed in the right direction. You’ll recall that the National Economic Council approved of taking some funds from the Excess Crude Accounts with a view to giving more resources to our Armed Forces.
“This is a commendable effort and we are ready to help with appropriation to ensure that we acquire those security weapons for the armed forces of this country to end this insecurity in the northeast, in the northwest, in the southeast/South-south and southwest as well.
“We believe that this is also going to help empower and build the capacity of other security agencies like the police because the police need to be there.”
‘If Anything Happens To Me, Bala Mohammed Should Be Held Responsible – Governor Ortom Reaveals Threat To His Life
The Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom has disclosed an alleged threat to his life and has said that his Bauchi State counterpart, Bala Mohammed, should be held responsible if anything happens to him.
The Governor made the accusation while speaking to journalists in Makurdi, the state capital, on Monday, February 22.
His accusation comes barely a week after Governor Mohammed accused him of being behind the hatred against Fulanis in Nigeria. Governor Mohammed also threw his weight behind herdsmen who go around carrying AK47 rifles.
Speaking at the press conference this afternoon, Governor Ortom accused Governor Mohammed of supporting illegal arms wielding foreign herdsmen.
“I want to think that, with what he said and what those herdsmen wrote to me and said that they were going to assassinate me, Bala Mohammed is also part of it, with what he has said.
“And if anything happens to me, I don’t want anybody to be in doubt, Bala Mohammed should be held responsible. Especially his last week outing after the condemnable remarks he made about Fulani carrying AK-47 and living anywhere in Nigeria.
“He came back to say Ortom is responsible for the hatred against Fulani men and I regard this as a way of vilifying me and profiling me towards assassination. He wants to instigate the Fulani people against me. I am not against Fulani people, they are in Benue State and they remain here,” Ortom said.
He called on Governor Mohammed to render an unreserved apology to Nigerians for comment which has been condemned by many Nigerians
“I think the governor of Bauchi State, my brother, Governor Bala Mohammed should just come out and apologise to Nigerians,” Governor Ortom said
